Airbnb Hosts, Need a Hand? I'm Here to Help!

I'll never forget the worst Airbnb I've ever had the displeasure of staying in...

The price tag was suspiciously low per night, which I should have taken as a warning. After hours of driving, we were ready to relax and enjoy the gorgeous Victorian home we had envisioned from the photos we had seen...polished original woodwork, bright, open spaces, an updated bedroom with what appeared to be a cozy king bed in a really cool tower room with a rounded window that was to die for. How could this place possibly be such a bargain???

Well, I found out the hard way that a bargain on Airbnb is hardly ever really a good deal. After struggling to check in and get inside with an absent and hard-to-reach host, we were greeted by the odor of cat urine and a cluttered, fusty foyer. Sure, the house had once been a grand palace in its sleepy neighborhood, but it had been let go for so long, a recovery didn't seem possible.

The room hit us in the face with the flowery scent of Febreeze and cheep fabric softener when we pushed open the stuck door. I was suddenly really glad I had brought a spare set of sheets from home, since that was all that was preventing my husband from calling the whole thing off and booking a hotel room.

I will spare you the details of the bathroom, but I will just say that I hardly touched any surface, and a guest should never have to see a stranger's hair in the bathtub drain...

Anyway, I became really wary of staying in Airbnbs after that particular experience. After recovering from that stay, it took awhile to get up the courage to book another one. After a lot of research and review-reading, we did get back into the Airbnb game, and we're happy we did. They are such a great way to save money while visiting awesome homes while traveling. You just can't get the same charm and comfort in a hotel.
